BeamMac

A Mac app that installs and starts BeamNG.drive on Apple Silicon.

BeamNG.drive only ships for Windows and Linux. BeamMac sets up Wine, the Metal graphics layers DXMT and D3DMetal and Steam for Windows on its own, then starts the game from a native Mac app. You log in to Steam and drive. A second button starts BeamMP for multiplayer servers. Not affiliated with BeamNG, Valve or Apple.

Problem

Running BeamNG on a Mac meant building a Wine prefix, DLL overrides and Steam settings by hand, and fixing them again whenever the game or Steam changed.

What I built

A SwiftUI app on top of shell scripts that do the work, so the terminal and the app behave the same. Each graphics backend is an APFS clone of the Wine engine that shares one prefix and one Steam library. DXMT comes from my fork with a frame latency option, and the Wine and DXMT downloads are checked against pinned SHA-256 hashes.

Highlights

  • One-click setup: Wine 10, DXMT, Apple's D3DMetal and Steam for Windows, about 265 MB, all in Application Support.
  • Steam starts hidden in the background, so the game is up in about 25 seconds.
  • Profiles for frame limit, details and traffic; Balanced holds 40 fps, a third of a 120 Hz display.
  • PlayStation and Xbox controllers as XInput gamepads, with battery, light bar and a live input test.
