DriveTech

BMW-style driving electronics for BeamNG.drive.

A BeamNG.drive mod that loads into every car and adds what a current BMW does on the road: drive profiles from ECO PRO to SPORT+, DSC, DTC and DSC OFF, xDrive, launch control, auto start-stop, auto hold and coasting. Each feature checks whether the car has the hardware for it and stays off otherwise. On top come rain with wet roads on any map and optional aquaplaning per tyre. For the ETK 800 it adds eight Touring setups, the 320d, 330d, 340d and 340i each with rear-wheel drive and xDrive, tuned to the real cars' figures, plus an F31-style instrument cluster in beta. A fan project, not affiliated with BMW or BeamNG.

Problem

BeamNG simulates the drivetrain in great detail, but the stock cars drive without the electronics around it: automatics hang in gear after you lift off, there is no launch control and no proper DSC modes.

What I built

Lua on BeamNG's vehicle extension system, one file per feature. Every feature runs isolated: if one throws, it is logged, switched off and its changes are undone while the rest keeps running. Nothing runs on AI or traffic cars, no stock file is overwritten, and 34 scenario tests run against BeamNG mocks under LuaJIT.

Features

Flip the switches, watch the curves.

These are DriveTech's defaults from its config.lua. Pick a drive profile and a DSC mode; the curves use the same formulas the mod runs in the game.

Throttle map

How far the throttle opens for each pedal position. ECO PRO starts soft and caps part throttle at 80 %, SPORT+ opens early. The last 3 % of pedal travel is kickdown and always full throttle.

After you lift off

Full throttle in D, then off the pedal. While the line is high the gearbox keeps the gear; as it drops, it upshifts. Stock BeamNG holds the high rpm for seconds.

Rain and aquaplaning

DriveTech makes it rain on any map, with wet roads. Paved surfaces lose about 25 % grip. Aquaplaning is optional and works out each tyre on its own: speed, water depth, tread depth, tyre pressure and width.

Grip at speed

How much grip a 205 tyre at 2.3 bar has left on an even water film. From 65 % of the critical speed it starts to float, just above it it floats completely.

Puddles and ruts

The water builds up while it rains and does not sit evenly. Ruts and dips hold more, and some spots collect real puddles. There a tyre floats earlier, often on one side only.

Against the real cars

Eight F31 LCI Touring configurations in the vehicle selector under ETK 800: every engine with rear-wheel drive and with xDrive. Each table puts DriveTech's figures next to the real car's.

The F31 never had a 340d. It uses the data of the 335d xDrive (N57 twin turbo); the rear-wheel drive version did not exist and is a what-if car.

Install

  1. Download DriveTech.zip from the latest release.
  2. Put the zip as it is, without extracting it, into Documents\BeamNG.drive\current\mods.
  3. Start BeamNG and spawn a car. DriveTech is in the radial menu under Vehicle features.

Highlights

  • Shift logic that upshifts after you lift off in D, holds the gear in SPORT and never upshifts mid-corner.
  • Launch control for automatic, DCT and manual; on torque converter automatics the converter is unloaded so the engine reaches launch rpm.
  • Eight ETK 800 setups from the 320d to the 340i with the ZF 8HP50 or 8HP70 and the final drives from BMW's technical data.
  • Aquaplaning per tyre from speed, water depth, tread depth, pressure and width; new tyres in 8 mm of water float from about 85 km/h, worn ones from about 60.
  • 0-100, 0-200, 100-200 km/h and quarter-mile timer as an in-game UI app.
